Lightning risk checker
How exposed is your building to lightning?
Answer a few questions about your building for an indicative risk level, then let our engineers confirm it on site.
Lightning risk checker
Does your building need lightning protection?
Describe the building and where it stands. The checker estimates how often lightning could strike it and compares that with what is tolerable for its use.
Your result
High risk
About one direct strike every 20 years
Expected strikes are more than ten times the tolerable level. Lightning protection is strongly recommended.
- Expected strikes a year
- 0.0496
- Tolerable a year
- 0.0015
A storey is roughly 3 to 3.5 m. Measure to the highest point of the roof.
How the checker works
It follows the simplified risk assessment in NFPA 780 (Annex L). Expected strikes come from the area the building collects lightning over (its footprint plus three times its height on every side), local lightning density (about 12–14 ground flashes per km² a year in published Nigerian studies) and its surroundings. Tolerable strikes depend on construction, contents, occupancy and consequences.
It is a first screen, not a design. A full IEC 62305-2 risk assessment on site looks at incoming services, soil, equipment and much more.
