Lightning, earthing & surge protection

One strike can destroy servers, start a fire or put people at risk. We assess the risk, design the protection, install it and test it, then keep it working.

What's included

Protecting people, buildings and equipment from lightning and faults.

Risk assessment & design

Lightning risk assessed to IEC 62305, then a protection design for your building.

  • Site survey of the building, its contents and surroundings
  • Risk assessment to IEC 62305-2
  • Protection design with drawings and a bill of materials

Lightning protection systems

Air terminals, down conductors and earth terminations, installed to the design.

  • Air terminals and roof conductor mesh
  • Down conductors in 25 × 3 mm copper tape
  • Bonding of roof plant, masts and metal structures

Earthing systems

Earth pits and electrodes built to the resistance your equipment needs.

  • Copper-bonded earth rods and inspection pits
  • Designed to the resistance your site needs; data and telecom rooms often call for 1 Ω or less
  • Furse earthing and lightning protection materials

Surge protection

Surge protective devices on power, solar and data lines.

  • Type 1+2 and Type 2 surge protective devices
  • Protection for AC distribution, solar DC and data lines
  • Coordinated with your distribution boards and inverters

Testing & certification

Earth resistance and continuity tests, with documented results.

  • Earth resistance testing at every pit
  • Continuity testing of conductors and bonds
  • Test report and certificate for your records and insurers

Maintenance & retesting

Scheduled inspection and retesting to keep the system effective.

  • Inspection of conductors, joints and pits
  • Lightning strike counters read and logged
  • Retesting and a fresh report each visit

How we deliver

How we deliver lightning & earthing work.

  1. Step 1

    Site risk assessment

We survey the building, what's inside it and the ground, and assess the lightning risk.

  2. Step 2

    Design

We design air terminals, down conductors, earthing and surge protection to suit.

  3. Step 3

    Installation

Our crew installs the system and bonds roof plant and metalwork to it.

  4. Step 4

    Testing and certification

We test earth resistance and continuity, and issue the results and certificate.

  5. Step 5

    Annual retesting

We inspect and retest on a schedule, and after any strike or building work.

Questions

What clients ask us.

Isn't earthing the same as lightning protection?

No. Earthing gives fault current a safe path to ground so people don't get shocked and protection devices trip. Lightning protection catches a strike on the roof and carries it safely down the building into the earth. A complete system needs both, plus surge protection for the equipment inside.

What earth resistance should we aim for?

It depends on the site and the equipment. Many sites aim for below 5 Ω; data centres and telecom rooms often call for 1 Ω or less. We design to the figure your site needs and test it at handover.

How often should the system be tested?

We recommend inspection and testing at least once a year, and again after a lightning strike, a fault or building work that could have disturbed the system.

Can you check an existing system?

Yes. We inspect and test what's installed, then report what is working, what is not and what to fix first.

Which products do you use?

We install Furse earthing and lightning protection materials, copper conductors and copper-bonded rods, and surge protective devices matched to each board.
